Computer motherboard selection skills

1. Several major elements of motherboard purchase - PCB board

First of all, look at the thickness of the motherboard, thicker is appropriate. Then observe whether the number of layers of the motherboard circuit board and the wiring system are reasonable. Pick up the motherboard and look at the light source across the motherboard. If you can observe the wiring components on the other side, it means that the motherboard is a double-layer board; otherwise, it is a four-layer board or a multi-layer board, and the latter should be selected when purchasing. Carefully observe the production date, model, and brand logo of each chip on the motherboard. The production date of each chip should not exceed three months, and the logo on the chip should be clearly identifiable without obvious marks such as scratches. Most of the PCBs that are not specially marked on the market are four-layer PCBs. The editor's experience is that they are basically four-layers unless they are sold and dived within 1,000 yuan.

The size of the motherboard PCB board, the full size of ATX is 305 × 240MM, of course, as long as it can meet the premise of fixing the chassis, it can be reduced when designing.

2. Several major elements of motherboard purchase - CPU power supply

cpu power supply

The three major accessories of CPU, memory, and graphics card directly determine the performance of the whole machine. Whether the motherboard we buy can provide a sufficient and stable power supply environment for these three accessories has become a very important factor. The power supply circuit of the CPU is usually composed of three parts: capacitors, inductor coils, and field effect transistors (MOSFET tubes). In addition to providing a more pure and stable current for the CPU, it also acts as a step-down current limiter to ensure the normal operation of the CPU.

The most common combination scheme is to form a relatively independent single-phase power supply circuit by "N capacitors + 1 inductor coil + N FETs" (Figure 1). Such a composition usually occurs in the CPU power supply part 2 to 4. Second, there are two-phase power supply, three-phase power supply and even four-phase power supply.

Due to the high power consumption of mainstream CPUs, the use of multi-phase power supply in the CPU power supply circuit is an effective way to reduce the internal resistance and heat generation of the motherboard. A few motherboards even install heat sinks on the FETs to ensure the stable operation of the CPU power supply circuit.

Although three-phase or two-phase power supply does not completely determine the quality of the CPU power supply circuit (for example, many ASUS motherboards use two-phase power supply), for most second- and third-line motherboard manufacturers' products, three-phase is indeed better than Two-phase power is much better.

3. Several major elements for motherboard purchase - capacitors

Capacitor classification

The selection of capacitors for the motherboard is also very important. The capacitor is a container for storing charges. Its function is to ensure the stability of the power supply to the motherboard and related accessories, filter out the clutter in the current, and then output the pure current to the CPU. and memory accessories. Capacitors have a great impact on the stability of the motherboard, especially the capacitors used in the power supply circuit of the motherboard. These capacitors mainly filter the input current for the first time. If there is a problem with this part of the capacitors, it will directly affect the stability of the computer.

Many friends think that the overclocking performance of motherboards using Japanese capacitors must be good. In fact, overclocking is not only related to capacitors, but also to motherboard circuit design, clock chip, power supply, BIOS design, etc. It is not determined by capacitors alone. Some motherboards that use Taiwan-based GSC capacitors are also very good at overclocking. However, Japanese capacitors are still helpful for the stability of the motherboard.
